The work of the Institute of War Losses includes, among other things, is to initiate academic discussions addressing the issue of war losses. As such, on 3 February 2023, in Warsaw, a seminar was held that started the next important stage in the process of understanding the complexity of the data concerning losses and damages in the eastern territories that were suffered by the Polish State and its citizens as a result of the Second World War, and working to understanding the conclusions from that data.

The meeting was moderated by Dr Piotr Olechowski, Head of the War Losses Research Department.

However, while "The Report on the Losses Sustained by Poland as a Result of German Aggression and Occupation during the Second World War, 1939-1945", which was published on 1 September 2022, concerns the war crimes committed by the Germans during the Second World War, the preparation of an analogous summary concerning the Soviet invasion and occupation still needs investigation and analysis.

Over the course of the seminar, a total of a dozen or so presentations were given on such topics as The Wartime Losses of Vilnius and the Surrounding Area, by Dr. Barbara Jundo-Kaliszewska; Research Perspectives concerning the Losses of Polish Science, by Prof. Maciej Franz; and Polish Sources of Wartime Losses in Eastern Poland, by Prof. Mirosław Kłusek.

The discussion that ensued between the participating speakers proved to be highly fruitful and, in scientific terms, inspiring.
